Type training and type ratings

How a type rating is added to a Part-66 licence: theoretical and practical training and, for a first rating, on-the-job training.

Principle

To certify maintenance on an aircraft in group 1 (and, as applicable, group 2), a B1, B2 or C licence holder must hold the relevant type rating endorsed on the licence (66.A.45).

Type training has a theoretical and a practical element. Its levels and content are defined in Appendix III to Part-66. It is generally delivered by a Part-147 organisation or approved by the authority.

On-the-job training (OJT)

For a first type rating within a given category or subcategory, on-the-job training is required. It takes place in a maintenance organisation, under supervision, and covers a representative cross-section of tasks.

Practical tips

  • Check that the training certificate states the category covered (B1, B2, C) and the engine variant.
  • Keep theoretical, practical and OJT certificates together for the endorsement application.
  • Plan the time between course completion and application: the regulation sets a validity period.

Frequently asked questions

Is type training enough to certify?

It allows the rating to be endorsed on the licence. Certifying also requires a certification authorisation from the organisation and compliance with recent experience requirements.

General information only. It does not replace the EASA regulatory texts, your organisation's exposition (MOE/MTOE) or the instructions of your competent authority.
